Commentary: The following reveals its being inconclusive, also in three parts; this reveals its occurrence in a part of the homologue. Both traditions say that atoms of earth, water, fire, and wind are permanent, while coarse [material things] are impermanent. At the beginning of an eon their substance is formed without being produced, and after the end of an eon their substance is destroyed without perishing; during the twenty empty eons they abide dispersed in various places, and when the subsequent eon is formed, two combine to produce an effect, proceeding in this way by turns up to the great earth. What is produced is always a unified combination, and the producing causes are always multiple dispersed entities, as explained at length in the Commentary on the Viṃśikā. "Space and the like" here includes time and so forth. In the phrase "atoms and the like," "and the like" includes manas and so forth, as it, like atoms, is also obstructive. Therefore, in this thesis of permanence, space and atoms are the homologous examples; the reason "lacking tangible obstruction" is present in space and the like and absent in atoms and the like, so it occurs in a part of the homologue.
