The conclusion has two parts: first, a general conclusion; second, individually taking up [each member] to conclude. This is the first. Following Vasubandhu, the thesis is also a proof; hence it says 'thesis and so forth'. The three—thesis, reason, and example—are called 'multiple statements'. When the proponent uses these multiple statements to awaken the opponent and the witness, they are called a proof. From Diṅnāga onward, mentioning the thesis as that which can [initiate the] 'and so forth' takes what is included by 'and so forth'—namely the one reason and two examples—as the proof. The thesis is the instrument to be established by the proof, and therefore it is generally concluded and clarified within the proof.
