The moderate division into four: (1) Primordial without being a transformation: primordial nature (prakṛti), because it can produce others, is called primordial; because it is not produced by others, it is not a transformation. (2) Transformations without being primordial: this has two interpretations; the first says sixteen principles, namely the eleven faculties (indriyas) and the five gross elements (mahābhūtas); the second says eleven kinds, excluding the five gross elements. (3) Both primordial and a transformation: this also has two interpretations; the first says seven principles, namely the great principle (mahat), egoity (ahaṃkāra), and the five subtle elements (tanmātras); the second says twelve kinds, namely the former seven plus the five gross elements—because they can produce others, they are called primordial; because they are produced by others, they are called transformations. (4) Neither primordial nor a transformation: the spiritual self (puruṣa), because it cannot produce others and is not produced by others.
