Commentary: Marking the substance of 'without application': it means that in the place of that example, if one does not say 'whatever is produced is impermanent, just like a pot etc.,' then one does not prove that wherever there is being produced, impermanence necessarily follows; that is, being produced and impermanence do not connect to each other. This is the meaning of 'without application.' Because of this lack of application, even if being produced is seen on sound, it cannot establish that sound is impermanent; therefore, if it is without application, it is a fault of the example. If one says 'whatever is produced is impermanent, just like a pot etc.,' then one can prove that impermanence necessarily follows the nature of being produced. Since sound has being produced, impermanence necessarily follows it as well, and they connect to each other; this is the meaning of 'with application.'
