As for "based on cognition," based on the preceding characteristic of cognition, continuity begins to arise. That which is relied upon is subtle, being exclusively equanimous feeling; that which relies upon it is coarse, fully producing suffering and pleasure, hence it is said to produce suffering and pleasure. Furthermore, the characteristic of cognition that is relied upon abides by inwardly cognizing objects, like an eye; this continuous consciousness runs universally to external objects, like awakening. Therefore it is said that the awakening mind gives rise to thoughts; giving rise to thoughts is precisely the discrimination of attachment to dharmas. The aggregate of consciousness is associated with this coarse grasping and runs universally to all objects; hence it says "constantly associated without interruption."
