"Awakening to the change of thoughts": within the characteristic of change, one discriminates the internal and the external, and posits self and what belongs to self. Practitioners of these three vehicles are all able to fully understand that internally there is no ātman, and externally there is nothing belonging to self. It intends to show that the mind-essence that is characterized had been asleep in avidyā, dreaming in the characteristic of change, but now gradually conforms with wisdom, attaining a slight awakening from the dream of the characteristic of change; hence it says "awakening to the change of thoughts." Because of attaining this awakening, the six kinds of the characteristic of change are extinguished forever and do not arise; hence it says "thoughts have no characteristic of change." This is the benefit of awakening.
