"Fundamental perfuming of the karmic consciousness" means: because this karmic consciousness perfumes avidyā, being confused about signlessness, it gives rise to the characteristics of the capacity to see and objects; seeing and characteristics continue without end in saṃsāra. This seeing and characteristics exist in the ālayavijñāna. Although those of the three vehicles are free from the coarse suffering of the karma of fragmented [birth and death] bound to the consciousness that discriminates objects, they still undergo the subtle suffering of conditioning of the ālayavijñāna; therefore it says, "the suffering of arising and ceasing of the three vehicles."
