When it says, "If one attains thoughtlessness, then one knows the arising, abiding, change, and ceasing of the characteristics of the mind," it is because when one has not yet attained thoughtlessness, one cannot completely know that all characteristics of the mind are entirely dreams, and hence one cannot be called enlightened. Because the Buddha has attained thoughtlessness, he can completely know that all sentient beings sleep in avidyā and dream in the four characteristics; only then does he receive the name of enlightenment.
