Third, the Saṅgha Jewel: "saṅgha" pervades both ordinary persons and noble ones, but "jewel" applies only to the noble ranks. "Noble ones" pervades both the Greater and Lesser [Vehicles], but the bodhisattvas are supreme. Therefore, here refuge is taken only in the saṅgha of great bodhisattvas on the grounds: realizing the principle and initiating practice is called "practicing in accord with reality." Below, the text says: "perfuming through the power of the Dharma" is the practice prior to the grounds; "practicing in accord with reality" is the practice on the grounds; "fulfilling the expedients" is the stage of completing the grounds. Here, "and the like" raises the middle to include the preceding and the subsequent. Furthermore, based on the Ratnagotravibhāga, two kinds of practice are explained regarding bodhisattvas on the grounds in terms of fundamental and subsequently attained [cognition]. That treatise says: "First, practicing in accord with reality, understanding the single flavor of reality as it is. Second, practicing pervasively, fully knowing that the One Mind has realms of phenomena as numerous as the sands of the Ganges." Now, in this text, raising the fundamental to include the subsequently attained is why it says "and the like." Based on the Dharmasaṅgītisūtra, the myriad practices are comprehensively subsumed into two kinds of practice. That sūtra says: "Practicing in accord with reality refers to making the aspiration for awakening; practicing without heedlessness refers to fulfilling the aspiration for awakening. Furthermore, practicing in accord with reality refers to practicing giving; practicing without heedlessness refers to not seeking a reward," and so forth. Here too it raises the first to include the latter, which should be understood. Taking refuge in and venerating the Three Jewels is finished.
