In the specific explanation, the six marks constitute six sections, each first indicating and then explaining. Among these six, there are altogether three pairs: the first two are one pair, referring to the subtle afflictions in the empirical consciousness, because they grasp external phenomena as real. Among the six defilements, these together constitute dharma-grasping, abandoned by bodhisattvas on the grounds, and are also subsumed within the five minds below, because they have the meaning of reliance. The next two are one pair, referring to the coarse afflictions in the empirical consciousness, where upon the preceding [conceived] real objects, they further give rise to afflictions such as craving and anger. That is, after entering the five minds below, it separately explains the mental consciousness, where grasping grows deeper, grasping the self and what belongs to the self, and so on; among the six defilements, these are abandoned by the two vehicles and others. The last two are one pair, referring to creating karma based on afflictions and sinking long in bitter retribution.
