五者、名為相續識，以念相應不斷故、住持過去無量世等善惡之業令不失故、復能成熟現在未來苦樂等報無差違故，能令現在已經之事忽然而念，未來之事不覺妄慮。

[The text states:] "The fifth is named continuing consciousness, because it is conjoined with thought without interruption; because it sustains the good and evil karma of immeasurable past lifetimes, etc., so that it is not lost; because it can further mature the pleasant and painful retributions of the present and future without error or discrepancy; and because it can make what has already passed in the present suddenly come to mind, and unconsciously harbor delusive concerns about future matters."
