Question: Here, since the deluded mind equally perfumes tathatā to initiate practice that turns against the stream, and since the perfuming of the manas belongs to the ālaya[vijñāna], how can each independently give rise to the aspiration and cultivate practice? Answer: Previously, ordinary beings and followers of the two vehicles did not awaken to the ālaya[vijñāna], but merely gave rise to the aspiration and cultivated practice through the sustaining power of the differentiating empirical consciousness; because they did not penetrate the root, their approach to great bodhi was distant and indirect, hence it is called "gradual." These bodhisattvas, having realized the fundamental consciousness of ālaya, rely precisely on the sustaining power of this consciousness to give rise to the aspiration and cultivate practice; because they have penetrated the root, their approach to great bodhi is intimate and direct, hence it is called "swift." This distinguishes perfuming in terms of the mutual support of what is relied upon, not that they give rise to the aspiration independently, etc. This is as explained below under the section on the aspiration based on realization.
