[The text states:] "Furthermore, what is called the empirical consciousness is this continuing consciousness, based upon which ordinary persons grasp ever more deeply, calculating a self and what belongs to a self, producing various false attachments, climbing upon objects according with states of affairs, and discriminating the six dusts. It is called the empirical consciousness, and is also called the discriminating consciousness. It is furthermore called the differentiating empirical consciousness, because this consciousness has the meaning of being augmented by the afflictions of view and affection."
