In the explanation, the differentiating empirical consciousness is the aforementioned mental consciousness. Because this consciousness does not know that the various dusts are only consciousness, it grasps that real objective realms exist outside the mind. Although ordinary beings and followers of the two vehicles give rise to the aspiration to advance toward liberation, they still consider that there is a birth-and-death to be loathed and a nirvāṇa to be desired, failing to understand the principle of mind-only; yet, through the power of this intention, after a long time they still attain bodhi. Therefore it says, "the perfuming of the differentiating empirical consciousness... gradually advance toward the unsurpassed path."
