In the second part, on remedies, 'observe with wisdom' means: relying on the discernment and wisdom that one possesses according to one's capacity, one observes all demonic activities, investigating and remedying them. If one does not observe, one falls into heterodox paths; hence it says, 'not letting this mind fall into the heterodox net.' This is the third, 'observing with wisdom,' among the three kinds of tests. 'One should diligently maintain right mindfulness without grasping and without clinging' comprehensively reveals the preceding two methods among the three: because this Mahāyāna gate of śamatha exclusively cultivates the samādhi of principle and has no other resort, the initial refining through samādhi and cultivating in accord with the original are not distinct methods; therefore they are explained together. Merely relying on the original gate of śamatha, without grasping and without clinging, the heterodox cannot interfere with the orthodox and will naturally retreat and disperse. If one grasps and clings, one turns away from the orthodox and enters the heterodox; if one does not grasp or cling, then because of the heterodox the orthodox is revealed. Therefore, the distinction between heterodox and orthodox consists essentially in clinging and not clinging. For one who does not cling, there is no hindrance from which one is not freed; hence it says, 'distance oneself from all these karmic hindrances.' As the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* says: 'Except for the true nature of all phenomena, all the rest is demonic activity.' A verse says: 'If one discriminates and conceptualizes, that is the snare of Māra; being unmoving and without discrimination, that is the seal of the Dharma.' This is what it means.
