"Bodhisattvas, who from their first generation of the mind of correct faith", and so forth: at the beginning of the ten faiths when they first generate the mind, they observe the essence of the cause and effect of the svabhāva-pratītyasamutpāda of the fundamental consciousness and attain the perfection of correct faith. Therefore, in the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, regarding that fundamental consciousness, it says: "When a bodhisattva first arises, he should first observe the true causes and conditions of all phenomena." This is what it means. In the ranks of the three ranks of worthies, by mental discourse they make comparative observation, hence it is said "observe". On the grounds, they realize it but not to the limit, hence it is said "partially", because they only awaken to the mark of abiding and do not awaken to the mark of arising; the Tathāgata completely comprehends all four marks, and therefore can fathom the source.
