'West Taiyuan Monastery' is Chongfu Monastery in Chang'an. Since throughout the realm there were five monasteries all named Taiyuan, to distinguish it from the other four, it says 'West.' The east was Yangzhou; the south was Jingnan Prefecture; the west was Chang'an; the north was Taiyuan (also named Chongfu); and the central was the Eastern Capital (the present-day Fuxian). They were all called Taiyuan because Wu Zetian was born in Taiyuan, and since these were all established from her donated residences, they were so named out of reverence for her birthplace. 'Śramaṇa' is the general title for the assembly of the Śākyan [monks], translated here as 'diligently putting to rest.' It means diligently cultivating morality, meditation, and wisdom, and putting to rest and extinguishing afflictions, karma, and suffering; hence one receives this designation. 'Fazang' had the secular surname Kang; he was the third patriarch of Huayan, imperially posthumously titled Great Master Xianshou. His virtuous deeds were grand and magnificent, as detailed in his biographies. 'Composed' (*shu*) clarifies that it was not an original creation. As Zhongni said: 'Transmitting and not creating, trusting in and loving antiquity.' Clarifying one's own humble labor, he therefore said 'composed.'
