Second, the result. Commentary: Regarding 'due to the preceding...' and so forth: the expedient practice is that which refutes, and the marks of arising and ceasing are that which is refuted. Furthermore, the path of expedients is that which reveals, and the nature of non-arising and non-ceasing is that which is revealed. Regarding 'this fundamental...' and so forth: before reaching this stage, fundamental ignorance and the truly pure mind are constantly combined, forming these marks of consciousness. Now, having reached this stage, ignorance is exhausted, and only the One Mind remains, its illuminating essence standing alone—with what could it combine? Hence the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā says: 'How could a single dharma combine?' Regarding 'that is, revealing...' and so forth: the commentary's intention here is to explain that the treatise text reveals and discloses across alternating phrases. That is, refuting the marks of arising and ceasing of fundamental ignorance within the composite consciousness immediately reveals the unborn and unceasing dharmakāya of original enlightenment; extinguishing the continuing marks of karma and so forth within the defiled mind accomplishes the actualized enlightenment of the pure, perfect, and all-encompassing cognitive sambhogakāya. Here, this first explains the meaning of revealing the dharmakāya in the first section. The dharmakāya is simply original enlightenment, receiving its name according to concealment or manifestation. Bringing up both now is precisely to contrast it with the subsequent actualized enlightenment. Regarding 'at the...' and so forth: the six defiled minds all rely on ignorance combining with the true to achieve continuation. Now, since ignorance is exhausted and combination does not occur, on what could the defiled mind rely to achieve continuation? Therefore, they all cease along with it. However, all defiled minds are false in their marks but true in their essence; thus, their marks cease but their essence does not cease. Hence it is said: 'without extinguishing the mental essence.'
