'The Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa…' is the third: re-confirming the proof. 'Unarisen…' means: impermanent dharmas must lack intrinsic nature; because they lack nature, they are neither arising nor ceasing. This differs in wording from the Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra, but the meaning is identical. 'The seven consciousnesses…' also refers to the meaning that transmigration lacks nature and the four marks are free from thought. Therefore the Yuanjue jing says: 'Knowing they are sky-flowers, there is no transmigration, nor are there body and mind undergoing that saṃsāra.' The original text of the Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra says: 'The collection of the five consciousnesses does not transmigrate.' It now says 'seven consciousnesses' merely due to a slip of the commentator's pen. 'The tathāgatagarbha…': because it has a real substance that cannot be obliterated, the locus of arising and ceasing is itself the tathāgatagarbha. The Śūraṅgama-sūtra says: 'Arising, ceasing, departing, and coming are fundamentally the wonderful tathatā-nature of the tathāgatagarbha.'
