Regarding "The various consciousnesses...", second: explaining the indicated text. Now this pertains solely to the mind; hence it says "the various consciousnesses." If it were said to be generated from the harmony of the five aggregates, this would encompass both form and mind. Regarding "And having no...", just as waves have no separate essence and rely solely on water, the upper text states: "Relying on the tathāgatagarbha, there is the mind of arising and ceasing," and so forth. The mind of its own mark is the aforementioned cause of arising and ceasing that does not maintain its own nature. Regarding "The relying...", it is only that names are posited differently according to dharma and person; manas and the mental consciousness (manovijñāna) are precisely sentient beings, having no separate essence, and are generated by the gathering of the marks of arising and ceasing of the aforementioned various consciousnesses. Furthermore, sentient beings are the general, while manas and so forth are the specific; although general and specific differ, their essence is one: all arise from the mind and take the mind as their support. However, herein the relying and the supported arise, differentiated by comparing mind (citta), manas, and mental consciousness (manovijñāna); there are universal and restricted applications, which can be seen upon reflection. The Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra also says: "The storehouse consciousness is called mind (citta) (the eighth); the thinking nature is called manas (the seventh); and that which discerns all objective marks is called consciousness (vijñāna) (the first six)." Here, "mind" is the tathāgatagarbha, "manas" refers to the five [consciousnesses], and "mental consciousness" is solely the sixth; hence it differs from that.
