"Here..." below: second, separately explaining the text. First, it clarifies the meaning of arising, which points to the preceding passage of the Śāstra. "This then..." below: revealing the intent. It does not mean that the mind is the producer and dharmas are what is produced; rather, because the true mind conforms to perfuming, its entire essence becomes movement and produces all dharmas. Just as gold produces vessels and the like, it is therefore said to "arise." "If avidyā..." below: reveals the meaning of cessation, which refers to the passage below stating, "because the cause ceases, the conditions cease," and so forth. "This then..." below: clarifies the intent. It clarifies that this essence of mind reverses back to its source, uniquely manifesting the purity of its nature; hence it is said that "the mind ceases." This merely means that within the mind there is no false movement; because it is tranquil, it is called "cessation." Thus the Commentary says: "The source of mind returns to purity, hence it is said to cease." This reveals the meaning of arising and ceasing with reference to the true mind. If explained with reference to the deluded mind, the karmic consciousness and the transforming consciousness are termed the "mind." This being the case, the deluded mind either arises or ceases within the true mind, whereas the true mind neither arises nor ceases. As shown in the preceding text, when the continuing mind ceases, the nature of cognition is not destroyed, just as when the marks of the waves cease, the nature of wetness is not destroyed. Although both the true and the deluded, as discussed above, possess the meaning of arising and ceasing, when examined fundamentally, it is only falsehood that has arising and ceasing, while the real has no arising or ceasing.
