In the metaphor, the treatise states: "Just as in the world..." When matched with the dharma, there are two explanations: First, clothing is used as a metaphor for the One Mind, and incense as a metaphor for defilement and purity, because incense can be pleasant or unpleasant. Second, clothing originally has no fragrance, but through being perfumed comes to have fragrance, which serves as a general metaphor for the meaning of the perfuming of defilement and purity. Because purity originally has no defilement, when perfumed it comes to have defilement; defilement originally has no purity, but when perfumed it comes to have purity. One should simply take the general, overarching meaning without necessarily dividing the metaphor into separate correspondences; the latter meaning is correct.
