"Answer," etc., is second: the reply, in two parts: first, the direct reply. "Ordinary persons are unawakened": because they have not heard the Mahāyāna teaching and have not met true spiritual friends, they do not know that all dharmas are transformed by the ālayavijñāna. Furthermore, they do not know that the transforming consciousness is a combination of the real and the false and has no self-nature; hence it says "unawakened." "Supporting power": relying on the conceptual differentiation of mental consciousness, they see saṃsāra and nirvāṇa outside the mind, and from this generate the mind that loathes the suffering of saṃsāra and aspires to seek nirvāṇa, assisting in perfuming tathatā; tathatā supports this power of active perfuming, and from this they generate the intention to cultivate practice. "Not comprehending the root": because they cannot understand their own mind, they give rise to two false thoughts—seeking the path at a distance when it is right before their eyes, and seeking the Buddha externally when he is within. Since their understanding is incorrect, their practice is also roundabout; thus they cannot quickly proceed toward bodhi, which is why it says "distant." "Comprehending the root": having known that all dharmas are manifested by mind-only, they ultimately do not follow the conceptual differentiations of coarse consciousness, grasp at dharmas outside the mind, or plan to abandon saṃsāra and seek nirvāṇa separately. Although cultivating all practices, there are no practices to be cultivated; although saving sentient beings, there are no sentient beings to be saved. Therefore the sūtra says: "Comprehending mind and objective realms, false thoughts do not arise." This is cultivating practice through comprehending the root consciousness. Having forgotten conditions and illuminated inwardly, they accord with their original nature and quickly join with the path; hence it says "intimate and close," just as cultivating generosity and the rest in accordance with nature below. The earlier statement, "having confidence in one's own nature, knowing that the mind moves falsely and that there are no external sense spheres, cultivating the method of detachment," and so forth, is precisely this practice.
