14.46

一、問中，論　上說真如者，謂前門中云：從本已來，離言說相，離名字相，離心緣相，畢竟平等，無有變異，不可破壞，唯是一心，故名真如。云何下，對前正難。前說離相平等，今說功德差別，前後矛盾，其義安在？

First, within the question: The treatise states: "Previously explaining that tathatā..."—this refers to what was said in the previous gateway: from the beginningless past, it is free from the marks of speech, free from the marks of words, free from the marks of mental conditioning, ultimately equal, without alteration, indestructible, and only One Mind; hence it is named tathatā. "How..." onward presents the direct challenge against the preceding. Previously it was said to be free from marks and equal, but now differentiated virtues are spoken of; the before and after contradict each other—where does the truth lie?
