15.39

又有一千比丘，於然燈佛末法之中出家學道，於和尚所生不淨心。其師已是阿羅漢果，後諸弟子隨壽脩短，將命終時，無所依怙。師令一心稱然燈佛，乘茲善力得生天上。天上壽盡，以前虛食信施之業，墮餓鬼中，八萬四千歲。後墮畜生，畜生罪畢，為貧賤人。復因前世出家力故，稱南無佛。以稱佛故，八千世中常值佛世而眼不見，乃至今日遇佛釋迦，見如赤土，正長五尺。是時，世尊即現胸上德字，令比丘讀，讀已懺悔，見佛金色，即為授記，次第作佛。

Furthermore, there were one thousand monks who, during the final dharma of Dīpaṃkara Buddha, went forth to practice the Way and gave rise to an impure mind toward their preceptor (upādhyāya). Their master had already attained the fruit of an arhat. Later, when the disciples, according to the length of their lifespans, were about to die, they had nothing to rely upon. The master instructed them to single-mindedly recite Dīpaṃkara Buddha's name, and relying on the power of this wholesome deed, they were born in heaven. When their heavenly lifespan ended, due to their past karma of eating the offerings of the faithful in vain, they fell among the hungry ghosts for eighty-four thousand years. Later, they fell into the animal realm. When the guilt of the animal realm was exhausted, they became poor and lowly humans. Again, due to the power of their past renunciation, they recited 'Namo Buddhāya'. Because of reciting [the name of] the Buddha, for eight thousand lifetimes they constantly encountered Buddha-eras yet could not see them with their eyes. Up to today, they met the Buddha Śākyamuni and saw him like red earth, precisely five feet tall. At that time, the World-Honoured One manifested the svastika mark on his chest and instructed the monks to read it. Having read it, they repented, saw the Buddha's golden color, and he immediately gave them prophecies of attaining Buddhahood in succession.
