17.19

一、顯勝德。疏　依人空見者，以於人空得自在故。若約法空，但相似見，未是證故，名為少分。若依人空，此即已證，但未得法空，故名少分。此約兼明，非今正意。發心住中作此事者，隨其悲願之力，能作八相成道，利樂眾生，同今釋迦化儀也，此如《華嚴》所說。然此科中有自利利他之異，詳之可見。若前後相望說者，由佛菩薩教故，發直心，行無住行；由護法故，發深心，行自利行；由大悲故，發大悲心，行利他行。又由自利行故，得見法身；由利他行故，能現八種等。

First, "Revealing the Supreme Virtues":
Regarding the Commentary's "Seeing in reliance on the emptiness of person": because one has attained mastery with respect to the emptiness of person. If discussed in terms of the emptiness of dharmas, it is merely a semblance of seeing and not yet realization; hence it is called "a partial fraction." If in reliance on the emptiness of person, this is already realized, but because one has not yet attained the emptiness of dharmas, it is called "a partial fraction." This is stated as a supplementary explanation, not the primary meaning here. As for performing these deeds in the stage of the abiding of generating the mind: in accordance with the power of their compassionate vows, they are capable of performing the eight phases of accomplishing the path to benefit and gladden sentient beings, identical to the transforming manners of Śākyamuni now; this is as explained in the *Avataṃsaka*.
However, within this heading there is the distinction between self-benefit and benefiting others, which will be apparent upon close examination. If explained in mutual reference to what precedes and follows: because of the teachings of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas, one generates the straightforward mind and practices non-abiding practice; because of protecting the Dharma, one generates the deep mind and practices self-benefiting practice; because of great compassion, one generates the great compassionate mind and practices practice that benefits others. Furthermore, because of self-benefiting practice, one is able to see the dharmakāya; because of practice that benefits others, one is able to manifest the eight kinds [of deeds], and so forth.
