一、標數。論　言方便者，汎論有四種：一進趣方便、二權巧方便、三修行方便、四集成方便。此文正當一三，兼於二四也。

First, indicating the number. The treatise: "Regarding expedient means": Generally speaking, there are four kinds: first, the expedient means of progressing; second, the expedient means of skillful adaptations; third, the expedient means of cultivation and practice; fourth, the expedient means of accumulation and accomplishment. The present text corresponds directly to the first and third, and also encompasses the second and fourth.
