"The patience of peacefully enduring suffering": peacefully and patiently enduring adverse and agreeable conditions without moving one's thoughts. "Wealth and glory enriching oneself": regardless of much or little, whatever enriches oneself is collectively called "gain." "Loss, depletion, and infringement": this also, regardless of much or little, whatever diminishes oneself is collectively called "loss." "Extravagantly censuring faults": if there is a minor fault, censuring it and speaking of it as great. "Extravagantly praising virtues": if there is a shred of goodness, praising it so that it becomes vast. "Praising according to reality": if there is one virtue, also speaking of one virtue. "Discussing faults according to reality": if there is one fault, also speaking of one fault. "Affliction and physical distress": beating, throwing, cold, heat, hunger, thirst, mosquitoes, gnats, and so forth—whatever brings unease is collectively called "suffering." "Comfort and delight of mind and spirit": coolness, satiety, warmth, sights, sounds, scents, tastes, and so forth—whatever is pleasant and comfortable is collectively called "pleasure." Some say that acquiring wealth is called gain, and losing wealth is called loss; speaking ill is called censure, and speaking well is called praise; speaking well to one's face is called honor, and speaking ill to one's face is called ridicule. Suffering and pleasure are the two feelings; this and the present explanation are each of a distinct sense. Toward gain, praise, honor, and pleasure, one endures them without joy; toward loss, censure, ridicule, and suffering, one endures them without anger. Therefore, the treatise speaks generally of patience.
