Fourth, regarding practitioners of miscellaneous practices, there are also two classes: First, regarding practitioners of merit: this refers to those whose nature is dishonest, who engage in illicit schemes, joining together to extol extraordinary merit to dazzle worldly people and solicit heavy donations, intending to use the small to summon the large and make a living by this. Having fulfilled their desires, they then rely on this to give rise to conceit, looking down upon and scorning others who lack offerings as entirely wrong. As it is with material offerings, so it is with renown. These are thieves who sell the Buddhadharma. This comes from the Jiaye jing. Second, regarding practitioners of other practices: this refers to those whose nature lacks wisdom and awakening, who cling rigidly to whatever single practice they learn, making a display of what they have learned to attract fame and gain, and rejecting all other practitioners as non-ultimate. These too are foolish people, thieves who undermine and harm the Buddhadharma. If a practitioner should contract even one of these afflictions, one should take strict warning against it.
