然上五句說有二意：一則各自別說，一句是一意，謂助佛揚化故、摧邪故、顯正故等；二則躡迹通論，從一至五展轉相由，即助佛揚化者，為摧邪故，摧邪為顯正故，乃至報如來恩故。

However, the above five phrases have two explanations: first, each is stated separately, with one phrase being one intent, meaning: in order to assist the Buddha in propagating transformation, in order to crush the heterodox, in order to reveal the orthodox, and so forth; second, taking up the preceding points in consecutive progression, from the first to the fifth they depend upon each other in turn: namely, assisting the Buddha in propagating transformation is for the sake of crushing the heterodox; crushing the heterodox is for the sake of revealing the orthodox; up to repaying the Tathāgata's kindness.
