Furthermore, when these five teachings are compared with the four teachings of conversion methods in Tiantai, there are only differences in division and combination, while the general outline is identical. That [system] divides the former and combines the latter, whereas this [system] divides the latter and combines the former. The four teachings are the Piṭaka, Common, Separate, and Round [teachings]. Taking the present [system]: first, the Hīnayāna teaching is that Piṭaka teaching. Second, the initial teaching has two categories: one, the initial teaching, which only expounds that all dharmas are empty, is that Common teaching; two, the differentiated teaching, which only expounds all marks of dharmas, is that Separate teaching. Third, the final teaching, which clarifies that the tathāgatagarbha accords with conditions to form all defilement and purity, and that dependent arising lacks [independent] nature so all is suchness, is the meaning of "simultaneous illumination" within their Round [teaching]. Fourth, the sudden teaching, which solely discerns the true nature, is the meaning of "simultaneous negation" within their Round [teaching]. Fifth, the round teaching, which clarifies that nature and marks are mutually interfused, is the meaning of "simultaneous negation and illumination" within their Round [teaching]. Because what is expressed by these three teachings is solely the One Mind endowed with all dharmas, they correspond to the inconceivable Middle Way of their Round teaching. Therefore, these three teachings are all subsumed under their Round [teaching]. This combines their Common and Separate into a single initial teaching, and divides their Round teaching into three: the final, sudden, and round; while they divide this initial teaching into two—Common and Separate—and combine this final [teaching] and the rest into a single Round teaching. Although division and combination differ, the dharmas are not different. However, they also discuss four [teachings] according to the ritual of conversion, and five [periods] according to time, as fully explained there.
