"Singling out to exclude the non-noble" refers to the two vehicles and bodhisattvas before the bhūmis. Because these two kinds of persons have already been able to distance themselves from the consciousness of the manas, it is explained with reference to ordinary beings in order to reveal its coarseness. Moreover, because the five manas are also called consciousness, fearing there might be confusion, it singles it out here with reference to persons. In fact, when the five manas are called consciousness, it is a karmadhāraya compound, and thus not the same as this. "Lacking an antidote..." and so forth means lacking the contemplative wisdom of actualized enlightenment. When the two vehicles and the three stages of worthies attain the contemplation of personal emptiness, they have no grasping or attachment; one should know that the deep grasping and attachment of ordinary beings is precisely because they lack contemplative wisdom. It is like a severe illness: if no medicine is administered, how can the affliction be cured?
