Regarding "Because of the consciousness of phenomena and so forth": previously, the karmic consciousness perfumed fundamental abiding-stage avidyā, causing it to give rise to the transforming and manifesting [consciousnesses], jointly constituting the ālaya and causing the sages of the three vehicles to receive the subtle suffering of inconceivable transformation. Here, the cognitive consciousness perfumes branch-and-leaf manifest avidyā, causing it to give rise to continuation, grasping, and reckoning names, creating karma, and receiving retribution, jointly constituting the consciousness of phenomena and causing sentient beings of the six paths to receive the coarse suffering of samsaric death in portions.
