Question: The latter two of the five consciousnesses are also the consciousness of phenomena. Since bodhisattvas rely on their perfuming to give rise to practice, how do they differ from the earlier ordinary persons and two vehicles? Answer: The former only know the consciousness of phenomena and do not know the root consciousness. Because they do not know the root consciousness, they do not understand that the objective realm arises from the mind. Having known the consciousness of phenomena, they only perceive that the mind arises from the objective realm. Cultivating practice relying on this, they therefore become distant. The latter know both consciousnesses. Because they know them, even though the mind conditions the objective realm, they comprehend that the objective realm is mind-only; therefore, they do not trust and use the consciousness of phenomena. Cultivating practice relying on this, they are therefore intimate and close.
