[Śāstra:] "[Tathatā] is not unfree": this is the eighth [antithesis], bound versus free.
[Commentary:] "Karmic fruition and so forth": due to the mind's stirring, karma is initiated and retribution is received, falling into the five destinies, which is called "bound". "Tathatā is free": because the mind does not stir, it is identical to tathatā. Within tathatā there is no karmic bondage; hence it is called "free". "And so forth" above [indicates that] because this section throughout adduces the manifesting defilements to contrastively reveal the aforementioned pure virtues, and the text of the treatise is abridged and does not list them completely, the present commentary thus briefly points to the latter three meanings.
