When a Mahāyāna practitioner first generates the bodhi-mind, they must first possess wisdom, understanding that the true nature is fundamentally inherent and avidyā is fundamentally empty, seeking to sever the fundamentally empty avidyā and seeking to realize the fundamentally inherent true nature. Next, they must possess compassion, to deliver the realms of sentient beings completely into the future. Thereafter, they must bind and govern themselves with vows, not allowing themselves to abandon them even momentarily and not giving rise to weariness. Only when these three are complete is it genuine initial practice of the Mahāyāna. Since they are not like that, it says "it is not." However, the expression "generation of the mind" here refers only to the initial mind of the stage of faith, merely first generating the intention to seek the path; it is not the same as generating the mind upon the fulfillment of faith to enter the abodings. It is like present-day practitioners who first generate the faithful mind of the Mahāyāna; this is still at the beginning of the stage of faith.
