Fourth, under vigor: Treatise: "all wholesome actions": the previous three and subsequent two, all wholesome dharmas. "The mind does not become lax or retrogress": the body depends on the mind, therefore it mentions only the mind. "Lax" means indolent, incapable of swift practice. "Retrogression" means falling back, abandoning halfway along the path. Commentary: "Diligence and courage vigor": "diligence" means seriousness; "courage" means valor. Diligent, one is therefore not lax; courageous, one therefore does not retrogress; this means advancing courageously in righteous matters. As Zilu asked Confucius: "Does the gentleman value courage?" Confucius said: "The gentleman values righteousness as paramount. If a gentleman has courage without righteousness, he creates chaos; if a petty man has courage without righteousness, he becomes a thief." He also said: "To see what is righteous and not do it is a lack of courage." May all practitioners examine this and be courageous. As for the mark of courage, the *Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa* says: "It is like vanquishing an enemy; only then may it be termed courage."
