The Commentary has three parts: first, explaining the meaning. 'Relying on the gate of arising and ceasing': previously, relying on the gate of tathatā, marks were obliterated and the mind was cut off, illuminating yet ever quiescent, and hence it was named calmness. Now, in terms of the gate of arising and ceasing, one contemplates the marks of all dharmas, following the current or reversing the current, the defiled and pure causes and results, and the diverse distinctions of worldly and noble, matter and mind; quiescent yet ever illuminating, it is therefore named insight. This, then, can skillfully differentiate the marks of all dharmas, whereas the former was unmoving in the ultimate truth.
