20.12

Under "Concluding contemplation," the Treatise says: "If at other [times]..." This means that when sitting peacefully, one focuses solely on calming (śamatha); but when arising from sitting, during all other postures and deportments, one should reflect and investigate matters of benefit and harm, mindfully wishing to reject or adopt [them]. The Commentary says: "Accords with principle": all wholesome dharmas accord with the principle of tathatā. As a previous passage states: "Because if a person practices all wholesome dharmas, they naturally return and accord with the dharma of tathatā." Because all wholesome practices externally contravene deluded defilement and internally accord with tathatā, it says "accords with principle," which is the approach of active observance. "Contravens principle": all unwholesome dharmas and non-vinaya behaviors internally contravene dharmatā and externally bring about retributions of suffering; hence, one should not engage in them, which is the approach of restraining observance.
