Regarding "śamatha-vipaśyanā," the text says: "How should one cultivate the gate of śamatha and vipaśyanā? What is called śamatha means stopping all marks of objects, in accordance with the meaning of śamatha contemplation. What is called vipaśyanā means differentiating the marks of the arising and ceasing of causes and conditions, in accordance with the meaning of vipaśyanā contemplation," down to "if śamatha and vipaśyanā are not complete, one will be unable to enter the path of bodhi." Regarding "clarifying both," that text says: "If one cultivates śamatha, it remedies the ordinary person's attachment to dwelling in the world and enables one to abandon the timid and weak views of the two vehicles. If one cultivates vipaśyanā, it remedies the fault of the two vehicles not generating great compassion and having narrow and inferior minds, and keeps one far from the ordinary person's failure to cultivate goodness," and so forth.
