Arising in association with the mind is called the associated mind, which is the active manifestation of the primary mind and mental factors—what the *Laṅkāvatāra* calls the "arising, abiding, and ceasing of marks." Arising without associating with the mind is called the non-associated mind, which is the seeds of the primary mind and mental factors—what the *Laṅkāvatāra* calls the "stream-like arising, abiding, and ceasing."
