言意識者，謂一切凡夫依相續識，執我、我所，種種妄取六塵境界，亦名分離識，亦名分別事識。以依見、愛等熏而增長故。

[Text of the treatise:] As for 'mental consciousness', it means that all ordinary beings, based on the continuous consciousness, cling to a self and what belongs to a self, and falsely grasp in various ways the sense-objects of the six dusts. It is also named 'separating consciousness', and also named 'consciousness that discriminates phenomena'. Because it increases through perfuming by views, craving, and so forth.
