The mark of cognition is precisely the mental factor of understanding among the particular states. This mark is associated only with the first seven [consciousnesses]. The seventh [consciousness] only conditions the perceiving component of the eighth, falsely grasping it as a real self and real phenomena, and produces a mind of like; "like" is greed among the primary defilements. The sixth [consciousness] universally conditions all objects of the three realms, universally generating minds of like and dislike; "like" is greed, and "dislike" is anger. The first five each condition an object of one current sense datum, each generating minds of like and dislike. However, this mark of cognition also completely takes tathatā as its essence, having not the slightest difference from the earlier meaning of enlightenment. If one can fully realize that cognition is devoid of the mark of cognition, one will then realize the wisdom of the Tathāgata.
