3.24

This refers to the mental factors of investigation and analysis among the four indeterminate ones, and defilements such as the five views among the primary defilements; this also exists only in the sixth consciousness. However, that which can grasp is also just the perceiving component, which arises and ceases in an instant, having no reality of being able to grasp. That which is grasped is just the intrinsic nature and difference of names and meanings: in a name there is no meaning, and in a meaning there is no name; the intrinsic nature of names and meanings is entirely unattainable, and the difference between names and meanings is entirely unattainable; arising and ceasing in accordance with the mind, how could they be grasped? If one can fully understand that the mark of grasping at names and the like is itself markless, one will then realize the wisdom of the Tathāgata.
