Question: If no other person can see the mind, how can it be said that there is the supernormal knowledge of knowing the minds of others? Answer: Because of giving rise to false thoughts, falsely there are the images grasped as conditions; this causes the possessor of the knowledge of others' minds to rely on these as the fundamental substance, transforming marks and taking them as conditions, which is termed 'knowing others' minds'. In fact, the images grasped as conditions are simply the images of the transformed perceived part, not the essence of the mind, nor the perceiving part. The essence of the mind and the mind's perceiving part are entirely devoid of physical form and are decisively unseeable. Therefore the Tathāgata said: 'Even with the Buddha-eye, I still cannot see the minds of sentient beings; how can foolish people say that there are marks of the mind to be apprehended?'
