"Tathatā" is the greatness of essence. "Immeasurable untainted [qualities]" is the greatness of attributes. "The function of superior cognitive objects" is the greatness of function. Sentient beings' minds wholly assume the greatness of essence of tathatā as their essence, and so are fundamentally replete with this greatness of attributes and greatness of function. Just as when a person loses their direction, the direction itself remains unmoved; and just as when water turns into ice, the wet nature of the ice remains as before, so that the mark of melting and the function of moistening are also fundamentally replete—this is precisely what is called the untainted seeds in the ālayavijñāna. It is like the melting and moistening nature in ice, which is not separate from the ice yet opposes the ice. Therefore, when the untainted path arises, the names "ālaya" and "vipāka" are cast off.
