This is like extremely wet wood, which cannot immediately produce fire when drilled. Relying on this, the Yogācāra provisionally establishes the distinctions of the five gotras, because their ignorance and afflictions are particularly thick, covering the untainted seeds so that although they exist, they seem as if absent.
