"This perfuming of essence and function again has two distinctions: first, not yet attuned; second, already attuned. 'Not yet attuned' refers to ordinary people, the two vehicles, and bodhisattvas of initial practice who perfume relying on the manas and manovijñāna, cultivating purely by the power of faith, not having yet attained cultivation with a non-conceptual mind because they are not yet attuned to the essence of tathatā, and not having yet attained cultivation with sovereign karma because they are not yet attuned to the function of tathatā."
