'Question: If the Buddhas possess boundless expedients and can effortlessly benefit sentient beings in the ten directions, why is it that sentient beings do not constantly see the Buddha, or witness divine transformations, or hear the teaching of the Dharma? Answer: The Tathāgata truly possesses such expedients, but only awaits sentient beings whose minds are pure to manifest a body for them. Just as when a mirror has dirt, forms and images do not appear, but when the dirt is removed they appear; sentient beings are also like this: when the mind has not departed from defilement, the dharmakāya does not appear, but when it departs from defilement it appears.'
