Those four are the view of extremes, wrong view, attachment to precepts, and attachment to views. Because of failing to understand the meaning of the selfless tathāgatagarbha, one falsely conceives that a personal self can be found, and then relying on it conceives annihilation or permanence, which is called the view of extremes. Relying on it, one denies the cause and effect of good and evil, which is called wrong view. Relying on it, one undertakes ascetic practices to seek liberation, which is called attachment to precepts. Relying on it, one seeks rebirth in the Brahmā heaven, the sphere of space, and so forth, which is called attachment to views. Therefore, once this view of a personal self is eliminated, none of those four kinds of views can stand on their own. The first part, explaining the view of a personal self, is concluded.
